How to Send Voice Notes on Discord (PC & Mobile)

Vladimir ElchinovJanuary 06, 2026

Discord finally added voice messages — but only on mobile at first. Here’s how to send voice notes on Discord across all your devices.

Quick answer: On mobile, hold the microphone icon in any chat to record and send. On desktop, click the + button and upload an audio file — there's no native voice recording on PC.

Voice Notes on Discord Mobile

Discord’s mobile app has proper voice messages:

  1. Open any text channel or DM
  2. Find the microphone icon (right side of text field)
  3. Tap and hold to record
  4. Release to send

Lock for Hands-Free Recording

While recording, slide up to lock. Then you can:

  • Take your finger off
  • Continue recording hands-free
  • Tap the send button when done

Cancel Recording

Slide left while recording to cancel. The message won’t send.

Voice Note Length

Discord allows voice messages up to 1 minute on mobile.

Voice Notes on Discord Desktop

Here’s the bad news: Discord desktop doesn’t have native voice note recording.

Your Options

Option 1: Upload Audio File

  1. Record audio using another app (Voice Recorder, Audacity, etc.)
  2. In Discord, click the + button (left of text field)
  3. Select Upload a File
  4. Choose your audio file

Option 2: Use Discord Mobile
Send the voice note from your phone, then continue the conversation on desktop.

Option 3: Browser Extension
Some browser extensions add voice recording to Discord. Or use a voice note tool that creates shareable links.

Why No Desktop Recording?

Discord desktop focuses on live voice chat through voice channels. They added voice messages to mobile first and haven’t prioritized desktop voice notes.

Where Voice Messages Work

Discord voice messages work in:

  • DMs (direct messages)
  • Group DMs
  • Text channels in servers
  • Forum channels

They don’t work in:

  • Voice channels (obviously — just talk)
  • Stage channels
  • Read-only channels where you can’t message

Server Restrictions

Some servers might have:

  • Voice messages disabled by admins
  • Channels where media is blocked
  • Slowmode that affects how often you can send

Playing Voice Messages

  • Tap/click the play button
  • Message plays in the chat
  • No native speed control (plays at 1x only)
  • Shows waveform and duration

Can’t Play Voice Messages?

  • Check your volume
  • Make sure you’re not in Do Not Disturb mode with sounds disabled
  • Try refreshing Discord
  • Update to latest version

Troubleshooting

No Microphone Icon (Mobile)

  • Update Discord to latest version
  • Check microphone permission in phone settings
  • Restart the app
  • Reinstall Discord

Voice Note Won’t Send

  • Check internet connection
  • File might be too large (shouldn’t happen for 1-minute limit)
  • Server might have media restrictions
  • You might be rate-limited (too many messages)

Poor Audio Quality

  • Get closer to microphone
  • Reduce background noise
  • Check nothing’s covering your phone’s mic
  • Discord compresses audio — some quality loss is normal

Others Can’t Hear It

  • They might have sounds muted
  • Check if the message shows as sent (not stuck sending)
  • Ask them to check their Discord audio settings

Desktop Recording Workarounds

Windows

Use Voice Recorder (built-in):

  1. Open Voice Recorder from Start menu
  2. Record your message
  3. Save the file
  4. Upload to Discord

Mac

Use Voice Memos or QuickTime:

  1. Open Voice Memos
  2. Record your message
  3. Save/export
  4. Upload to Discord

Browser Extension

Some tools add recording directly to Discord or create shareable links.

Voice Notes That Work on Any Platform

Discord voice messages are mobile-only for recording. Desktop users have to work around it. Cross-platform sharing means uploading files.

We built a browser extension that works everywhere. Click, record, get a shareable link. Works on desktop, works on mobile, works in Discord or anywhere else.

Send the link in Discord — or email, Slack, Twitter, wherever. The recipient just clicks and listens.

One tool for all your voice notes, not one voice note system per app.

FAQ

How do I send voice notes on Discord PC?

Discord desktop doesn't have native voice recording. You need to record audio separately (Voice Recorder on Windows, Voice Memos on Mac) and upload the file via the + button.

How long can Discord voice messages be?

Up to 1 minute on mobile. For uploaded files on desktop, the limit is Discord's file size limit (8MB free, more with Nitro).

Why can't I see the microphone button on Discord?

On desktop, there isn't one — that's the issue. On mobile, check you have the latest Discord version and microphone permissions are enabled.

Can I speed up Discord voice messages?

No native speed control. Voice messages play at 1x speed. This is one feature Discord hasn't added yet.

Discord voice messages work well on mobile but leave desktop users hanging. If you’re primarily on PC and need voice notes, you’ll need workarounds — either recording separately and uploading, or using external tools that create shareable links.
